Cris Robinson has impressive national-level player achievements—during his playing career he was a six-time National Amateur Champion and held the #1 national ranking in singles. He won the National Amateur title in singles twice and four times in doubles. Cris also is a Virginia State Clay Court Champion.
As a junior player, Cris exceled in the RTA Junior Development Program, was a Mills Godwin High School standout, and then went on to be a four-year starter for Clemson University. At Clemson, Cris achieved a trifecta of being honored as the Most Improved Player, the Most Valuable Player (1994 and 1995), and earning their coveted Sportsmanship Award.
Beyond his player success, Cris is regarded as one of Richmond’s great proponents of junior development. He was the first to organize a sanctioned USTA Mid-Atlantic QuickStart Tournament. Cris also created the Robious Tennis Academy and launched College Week Tennis Camp where junior players learn what it takes to play at the collegiate level from prominent tennis program coaches at UVA, Notre Dame, South Carolina, UNC, Baylor, Clemson and more. Impressively, over 100 College Week Tennis Camp alumni have gone on to play tennis at the collegiate level.
Cris was the Tennis Director for Robious Sports and Fitness Center and also held the Director of Tennis post at Willow Oaks Country Club. Cris was awarded USTA Mid-Atlantic Teaching Professional of the Year in 2006. He served on the Executive Board of the RTA and always looked for ways to advance Richmond’s tennis profile.
Today, Cris calls Charleston, South Carolina home where runs the Robinson Tennis Academy. We’re honored to have Cris join the Richmond Hall of Fame and applaud his impact on the Richmond tennis community.
