Woodlake Gets In on the Action

by Charles Tilley

This week Woodlake Swim & Racquet Club hosted an RTA supported tennis event, the RTA McDonalds Novice #3 L6. While an L6 is the lowest level tournament offered by the USTA, it is perfect for novice or beginning players looking to get a taste of sweet tournament action. This is an invaluable opportunity for such players seeking to hone in their games and later become more serious players gunning for points in the USTA Junior Ranking System. Ken McKay, head pro at Woodlake, oversaw the tournament which took place on clay courts in relatively good weather considering it is mid-July in Richmond.

Regardless of the actual point values associated with the tournament, all players were competing for the top prizes at any tennis event, the glory of the win and of course the trophy. There were many tight matches, especially the Boys' 10 Singles division which had two matches go all the way to the third set tiebreak. The winners of each division are listed below.
Boys' 10 Singles: Richard Oelhafen won the Round Robin (3 entrants).

  • Boys' 12 Singles:  Nicholas King def. James Pollard 6-0, 6-1
  • Boys' 14 Singles:  Paul Mendoza def. Dillon Sykes 6-0, 1-6, (11-9)
  • Boys' 16 Singles:  Nicholas Cella def. Adam O'Neil 6-4, 4-6, (10-8)
